Editorial Methodology

What we list, how we decide, and how honestly each record shows what has and has not been verified.

Last updated 14 October 2026

The directory currently holds 1,297 verified school records, 1,508 program records and 19 detailed program records. Research is not finished: the coverage page shows where each country stands, and an unresearched country is not the same as a country without dental schools.

Which schools are listed

A school, faculty, college or equivalent unit is listed when an official source confirms that it delivers an initial dental qualification — the degree that is the entry route to practising as a dentist in its system (for example DDS, DMD, BDS, BChD, BDent, or national equivalents such as Cirujano Dentista, Odontologia, Chirurgien-dentiste, Diş Hekimliği or Stomatologiya).

Listing does not depend on country, teaching language, ownership, size, whether the school admits international applicants, whether it offers English-taught programs, or whether it is a potential advertiser. Public, private, military and branch campuses are included; restricted admission is displayed, not used to exclude.

Not listed as dental schools
Dental-hygiene, dental-assistant and dental-technician schools; medical, nursing and pharmacy schools without a dental program; clinics and continuing-education providers; non-degree trainers; research institutes with no teaching program.

A school's name alone never establishes eligibility. Candidates we checked and excluded are recorded with the reason in each country's research record.

Four program tracks, never mixed

Programs are classified by what they lead to, and each track has its own pages and its own counts:

  • Initial Dental Qualifications — Programs that prepare applicants for the dentist pathway: DDS, DMD, BDS, BChD and nationally appropriate equivalents. 1,312 programs listed so far.
  • Advanced Standing — Programs that admit applicants who already hold a dental qualification, often a degree earned in another country. 29 programs listed so far.
  • Postgraduate Specialties — Verified specialist, clinical and academic programs taken after an initial dental degree. 145 programs listed so far.
  • Research Degrees — Relevant master's and PhD research programs in dental and oral sciences. 20 programs listed so far.

School lists and country counts include a school only when it has an initial dental program. A school that offers only postgraduate or research programs appears under those tracks, not in the A–Z of dental schools. A specialist certificate or master's is never presented as an initial dental degree, a certificate is not a degree, and a DDS or DMD is not a research PhD.

Qualifications are shown exactly

We display the exact official award and do not force dental education into a bachelor's/master's/PhD model. Filters group awards (BDS, DDS, DMD, BChD and so on) only to help search; the official wording, in its original language, is always kept.

School, campus and awarding body are separate

  • The parent university, the dental faculty or school, each campus, the degree-awarding institution, any administrative office and clinical-training locations are stored separately.
  • A school is located where students are taught. A foreign recruitment or administrative office does not change its country; a branch campus abroad is listed in the country of the campus with its awarding institution named.
  • Schools with similar names are never merged. Official English names are used where they exist; otherwise the English name is marked as a translation, and the official local-language name is kept exactly, in its own script.

Operating status

A school is shown as operating only with current official evidence — a current regulator list, admissions page, intake notice or academic calendar. Without it the record says status not verified. Suspended, relocated and closed schools are labelled; closed and suspended schools are kept as archival records and excluded from active results. A historical directory entry is never taken as proof of current operation.

Clinical training and costs

Where a school publishes them we record patient-care requirements, simulation facilities, supervision, who is responsible for placements, required travel and the clinical teaching language, as well as instrument-kit and laboratory fees. These are kept apart from tuition, and a missing item is shown as not verified rather than omitted.

Two levels of record, shown honestly

  • Basic record: identity, location, operating status, an official source and the qualification verified. Other fields are marked “Not verified”.
  • Detailed record: admissions, teaching language, costs and program structure researched on official sources, plus deadlines, clinical training and recognition where published.

A basic record is never presented as verified in every field. Unknown is not “no”: an unverified field never matches a filter.

Neutrality and commercial separation

Lists are alphabetical. There are no rankings, scores or “best” lists. Sponsored placements are labelled “Sponsored”, appear in their own sections, and cannot buy accreditation or recognition statements, verified badges, licensing-eligibility claims or positions in any list. Basic listings and corrections are free. Sponsorship disclosure.

This directory is independent. It is not affiliated with WDDS, KIDEE, CODA, the ADA or any regulator, accreditor or school.
